Maria Mar
PBS-featured artist-shaman María Mar integrates writing, visual art and performance to create interactive art experiences that change peoples’ lives. She specializes in personal growth and women’s empowerment through the arts and is an internationally known spiritual teacher. As an artist, Maria is a poet, performer, fiction and non-fiction writer, visual artist and storyteller with more than 20 years of professional experience.
Maria has been featured in PBS-Channel 13 and BronxNet television and numerous radio stations such as WBAI, WKCR (Columbia University Station), WADO (Spanish Radio in NY), Brooklyn College Radio Station and La Nueva Onda 1190 and is now the hostess ofher own internet radio show, Write to Dream Radio Show.
As a writing coach, Maria has taught creative writing for more than 15 years in the public school system and to adult women. She has brandished creative writing as a tool for life transformation; as in the workshops she facilitated for homeless women in the Regent Hotel Shelter, which lead to a commercial poetry book, Women of the Regent Hotel, and to the depiction of their writings in television.
Maria Mar has published half a dozen books and is the CEO of ShamansDance Books, the publishing branch of her company, ShamansDance. Her writings have been published by Viva Magazine, Daily News, Ser Padres, Heresies, New York, Newsday, The University of Arizona Press and the City College of New York, among others.
Maria Mar’s live performances, featured in PBS, Channel 13, are community ceremonies where the spectators become SpectActors in ceremonies of healing, transformation and empowerment. This art methodology was featured in Puro Teatro: A Latina Anthology, published by The University of Arizona Press in 2000. She has developed several female-wisdom based systems to help women in their self-empowerment, spiritual evolution and success.
As a shaman, Maria Mar is a Woman of Power. This means that she has transformed her pain into power, her emotional wounds into her Personal Medicine. She has trained for 14 intensive years in a full-time path to reclaim Female Wisdom. She has reclaimed the power of art as a ritual for individual and community transformation. Maria Mar walks her talk. Each book, digital product, performance or program she creates comes out of her own journey to freedom. She has worked, healed and addressed thousands of women in the USA, South Africa, Mexico and other countries and has worked with more than 70 organizations in the USA and abroad.
Maria’s passion is to empower women emotionally, spiritually, socially and financially. In her books and products, as well as her live presentations, she uses storytelling, poetry, metaphors and body language to appeal to the Female Way of Knowing. She also uses interactive performances, lecture-performances and arts & crafts to guide women into transforming their own lives into masterful works of art. She offers women several life coaching solutions, building a step-by-step approach to releasing self-sabotage and manifesting your dreams, healing issues with money, success and power.
